Summer Running

Hi,
I want to improve my overall physical fitness.

I want to start running and do a muscle strengthening program for overall muscle strength.

I want to improve my running for cross country and track next year.

I am also looking at entering the US Naval Academy. I can pass the army physical test, but want to do more than just pass.

My questions are:

  • What is a good running program to prepare me for cross country in the fall. Our cross country races are typically three miles long.

  • Should I start using creatine. Friends of mine use it and recommend it. Should I?

Answer by Dominique: Hi there,
Thanks for your running training question.

Your summer running should focus on building your base. It is of utmost importance that you work on easy runs and longer runs.

Speed running like intervals, tempo running and fartlek is important as well, but it is only after you have built a solid foundation that speed really starts to matter.

Good running programs for cross country running can be found in Daniels' Running Formula.

Regarding creatine: this is basically a bad idea. Apparently there is some evidence to suggest that creatine helps weight lifters and sprinters.

It does not help cross country runners / long distance runners. You can get all the food groups you need from a healthy, nutritious diet.

Supplements are highly overrated. I always think to myself:"If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is."

As a long distance runner you need sufficent carbs for energy and protein for muscle repair.

You can get your protein from chicken, dairy products, tofu, beans, chick peas, etc.

Hope this helps.
Kind regards,
Dominique
