Running on a Treadmill - Running Tips and Techniques





Running on a treadmill is an excellent way to get your running training done.

It is very convenient.

You can do it before you go to work, when you're watching television, or anytime that you just want to burn some calories.

Running is a good cardiovascular exercise. With a treadmill, you can have a quick and easy workout right in the comfort of your own home.


Running on a Treadmill vs. Outdoor Running

Don't you just hate it when it's either too hot or too cold outside that you couldn't go out for a run? When the weather outside is not suitable for running, running on a treadmill is your next best option to continue your training program. Not only is it a good solution, but it is pretty much the same as running outdoors too. Both have their own advantages and disadvantages though.

With a treadmill, you can walk, jog, run, and even do hill workouts. You won't have to worry about the weather and the hazards of your surroundings because you are running in a controlled environment. You can set a specific speed and set an incline to make your runs more challenging. The fact that you are running on a leveled surface makes it easier for your joints too.

However, running on a treadmill doesn't give you the advantage to be more in control with your every stride. The belt on which you run on helps your feet move backwards, making you exert less effort. You can run faster on a treadmill than you do outdoors. Especially when you are preparing for a race it is important to realize that the best preparation for an outdoor race is outdoor running. This is the reason why professional runners do not usually use a treadmill when training.

Running on a treadmill won't also give you the advantage of enjoying the beautiful scenery outdoors, or running with buddies.

Tips on Running on a Treadmill

Now for some tips and tricks for running on a treadmill. Warm up and cool down. Do not start on a fast speed. Work your way from slower runs to faster runs. You can do a brisk walk first for the first few minutes. Then slowly add speed as you work your way to doing faster runs. Cool down at the end by running at an easy pace for five minutes or so.

Wear comfortable running shoes. A pair of comfortable running shoes is probably the most important apparel you need in running. The wrong running shoes can lead to injuries and other disasters so make sure that you know what kind of shoes go with your foot type. If you don't know your foot type yet, you can visit a specialty running store and they would be glad to assist you.

Be mindful of your posture. While running on a treadmill, do not look down on the monitor all the time. This is not the correct running posture and your heart rate would not be shown as it really is.

Drink enough water while running on a treadmill. It is important to keep your body hydrated. When you run, you also lose water as you sweat too much. You also lose more water when running on a treadmill than on running outdoors if the room is not well-ventilated. Drinking lots of water to keep you hydrated.

Do interval running. Just like you would outdoors, it is also important to run intervals when running on a treadmill. In fact, treadmill running is a great way to do intervals as it stops you from cheating. When you do intervals and you get tired, it is very tempting to go a bit slower. With a treadmill you have got two choices: continue running or fall off! This is usually enough incentive to keep going!

So, use your treadmill for speed sessions. It is made for it. Same goes for hill running. Treadmills are ideal to simulate hillier courses.

Do not run with too much force. The belt actually helps you run so you don't need to exert too much force when running on a treadmill. Over exerting will just strain your muscles. Just stay at ease and let the belt help you.

Watch TV or listen to music. Just because you run on a treadmill with the same view doesn't mean that it has to be boring. You can always make your running experience a little more fun. You can watch your favorite show or listen to music that will motivate you in keeping up with your pace.

Running on a treadmill can be as much fun as running outdoors.
