1.5 Mile Run

I need to do a 1.5 mile run soon.

I have decided to join the British Army. I am excited to embark on this new journey but what I am not excited about is that I would be required to do a 1.5 mile run in just 10 minutes and 30 seconds.

I run about 6 miles in an average time of 42 minutes, twice a week. However, when I check how I did at the 1.5 mile run, I get around 12 minutes and 30 seconds. I thought I was doing well with my running, but now I feel like I need some 1.5 mile run training, maybe some special 1.5 mile run tips?

I do run more than 1.5 miles and my pace is much quicker when I do my 6-mile run. Why do I get this result? Do you have any 1.5 mile run tips to recommend?

Cheers,
Rob

Answer by Dominique:

Hi Rob,
Thanks for your 1.5 mile run training question.

It is my standard advice to increase your mileage if you are looking to decrease your average time. Long-distance runs will help you build your stamina. And the more stamina you have got, the longer you will be able to go faster, so this will likely result in a decreased time.

There seems to be a miscalculation in the times you provided me:

1.5 miles x 4 = 6 miles.

You run 1.5 miles in 12 mins and 30 secs.

12.5 mins x 4 = 50 mins.

But you run 6 miles in 42 mins...?

Something is a bit off. If you are able to run 6 miles in 42 minutes, then you should find it easy get 10.30 minutes in a 1.5 mile run.

However, if you are already doing some long-distance running yet still fail to get your average goal time, I would suggest the following 1.5 mile run tips to you:

1. Keep on doing those longer distances. Perhaps you would like to make sure you do your training sessions to a minimum of 3 times a week. Run at an easy pace where you are still able to carry out a conversation. Increase your distance steadily over time. Also see increasing mileage safely.

2. I also suggest that you do increase your pace in at least one workout. Maybe a tempo run, intervals, or a fartlek session would help.

If you consistently do more than two training sessions in a week and then combine some faster workouts with some slower, longer workouts then I am confident that you will be able to reach your 1.5 mile run goal.

Hope these 1.5 mile run training tips help you get into the British Army.

Best of luck with your career in the British Army.
Cheers,
Dominique
